This fantasy novel series written by George RR Martin, began in 1991 and in 1996 he delivered by the first volume entitled A Game of Thrones. Martined lengthen the trilogy in seven volumes. The fifth piece entitled A Dance with Dragons, took five years for Martin to write it and it was issued in 2011. The sixth book, The Winds of Winter, which is said not to be published before 2015.
The story of "A Song of Ice and Fire" takes place in the provinces of Westeros and Essos, with a history of hundreds of years. Three important stories take place: The chronicle of a dynastic war for the conquest of Westeros by many houses, the growing menace across a huge wall of ice on the northern border of Westeros and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king who was murdered in a civil war shortly before her birth, to return to Westeros with her dragons and rightfully claim the throne.
Drawing inspiration from historical events, Martin's work is far from a common fantasy novel. The series has received praise for its realistic elements. It subdues magic to battles and political intrigue. The first novel contains almost no magic, but its presence continues to grow in every book. Violence, sex and moral ambiguity are often depicted in over a thousand characters. Major characters are often killed and so the reader cannot rely on the myth that the heroes remain safe. The A Song of Ice and Fire also received critical comments on various depictions of women and religion.
Though originally released without taking much notice, the books of the series have sold over 15 million copies worldwide and have been translated into more than 20 languages. The fourth and fifth volume reached the top of the Best Seller list in the New York Times after their releases. Since then apart from the books, the HBO TV series "Game of Thrones" has been created, along with a comic book adaptation, and many card games, board games, and video games.
